Salt Flats Part II

A four and a half hour round-trip drive.  For a 15 minute sunrise.

So worth it.

My First Photography Contest

I recently entered a local landscape photo contest.  It was one of my 2013 goals to do so.

The results came back, and guess what...I placed 3rd!  Which probably means there were only three entrees, lol.  I actually don't know how many entrees there were.  I hope at least four.

And here are more pictures of Rain from this last week (at the park, Utah Lake, and Silver Lake).

3:30 AM

The night sky was clear, allowing me to see the stars, despite all the light pollution.  So I decided to take a drive up the canyon to see if I could get a picture of them.

I don't go into the canyon at night very often.  Freaks me out to be honest.  But having Rain there made me feel a little braver.

We went to a lake in the mountains.  Turned off the headlights and stepped out of the car.  We were greeted with one of the most spectacular night skies I have seen.

And so there I was, at 3:30 in the morning, taking pictures and walking around the lake in the dark with Rain following me.

Salt Flats

Rain at the Salt Flats.

She licked the salt several times, always crinkling her nose in displeasure.

Rain and the Dentist

Rain had her first dental appointment today.  A few of my friends joked about taking a dog to get their teeth cleaned.  Rain is more than a dog though.

When I picked her up, she was pretty out of it.  She slipped trying to jump into the car.  And she slipped trying to jump onto the bed.  She must've been drugged up pretty good, lol.

Since she was so groggy, we just took a leisurely walk down by the lake later in the afternoon to catch the sunset.  In one of the photos, you can see where they shaved her hair to administer the anesthesia.

Am I a Photographer?

I've asked myself this fairly often.  Especially in the last few weeks.

No, I'm probably not.  Not in the traditional sense anyway.

I have not gone to photography school.  I've had no formal training.  No tutelage under an experienced photographer.

What I am is someone that enjoys taking pictures of things he cares about.  And right now that thing is a dog named Rain.

P. S.  This probably won't be seen by many people, but if, by chance, you have a dog that you'd like pictures of, feel free to let me know.
